Indoor Season 10/11

February 13th 2011 Handicap Worcester

This weeks Worcester handicap round had a good turnout despite some archers off Island and some with injury problems.
Firstly four personal bests achieved this by Charlotte Harris she managed to put a massive 58 points on her best, Kate Dawe shot her first Worcester round and puts in a very creditable score and next up is Alice Crowe this is only her second full competition and she puts in a great show and next Adam Wright putting 15 points on his.
The handicap system works on archers scores over the weeks and is updated every time they shoot this is so that someone shooting on their handicap would score 1440 anyone over this score has shot well and under the score would mean they are shooting under the best this in fact makes recurve and compound equal.
Charlotte Harris topped the table this week with an outstanding performance followed by a fantastic shoot by Kate Dawe and a draw for the third step of the podium between Aalin George and Sarah Rigby this is the third week in a row the George and Rigby have tied on points there is no separating these pair.
Next up Adrian Bruce this being the first time he’s shot since the commonwealth games takes forth with Tony Hartley biting at his heals young Adam Wright shows his grow form followed by Barbara Harris, Colin Moore, Anne Rutland and Alice Crowe who hasn’t got her handicap rating this week but will have it the next time she shoots, also shooting this week was Adrian Breed deciding to shoot his second Portsmouth round.

January 30th 2011 Orrell Trip

At the weekend 12 members of the IOM Archery Club travelled to compete in the 12th Orrell Archers UK Record Status Portsmouth round held at Robin Park Stadium, Wigan. Adam Wright and Bradley Layton the two Junior recurve archers who have both of late been increasing their PBs, travelled across to compete in their first off-Island competition and yet again both achieved new PBs. Although their scores were not high enough to put them in the placings, Bradley put a total of 16 points onto his total and Adam increased his by 3 and both gained valuable competition experience. Once again the George sisters continued their excellent form, Charlotte taking 1st Place in the Ladies Recurve and finishing just 2 points short of the highest Recurve score of the whole day. Compound archer, Aalin again shot consistently well and easily took the Junior Girls Compound trophy. In the senior ranks, both Peter Mumford and Joy Gough put in good scores and both were rewarded by winning a bronze medal for their third place scores. Again, Peter’s score was only one point off the highest overall Veteran score on the day. The other archers shooting, Junior Recurve Chris Holmes and Charlotte Harris, and Senior Ladies Recurve, Barbara Harris and Anne Rutland all put in respectable scores but were outside the top three places. Unfortunately Senior Compound Allan George’s miss towards the end of the competition also left him out of the placings. Once again the Isle of Man competed very well in this Record Status shoot with the junior archers in particular showing their true potential.

December 19th 2010 Fita 18 & Christmas Fun Shoot

December 5th 2010 National Indoor Champs

There was no shooting at Onchan this weekend, as all eyes were focused on the National Junior and Senior Championships held at the Telford International Centre in Shropshire and the Manx archers really proved they are a force to be reckoned with! First up on Saturday were the two younger George sisters who now both shoot compound, Kirsten having changed to this discipline over the last year. Shooting in their respective age groups, the girls really shot extremely well, and Kirsten held on to her second place right through the competition and finished in silver medal position. Archery sensation Aalin George who is a member of the GB Junior Squad and is also sponsored by IOM Sport fought a hard battle all afternoon with her fellow squad member Daisy Clarke, only to be pipped at the post by one point, giving her second place in the Under 16 age group. However, this group was the highest scoring of all the Junior archers and therefore the winner was declared the National Junior Champion, with Aalin becoming the runner-up to this prestigious title. To put the top hat on the proceedings, it was then announced that Aalin had been awarded Young Archer of the Year by Archery GB. This undoubtedly secures her position in the GB squad for the coming year. On to Sunday and the turn of the Senior archers to compete. To give an idea of the scale of the competition, there were a total of approx. 400 archers taking part in this competition in the various disciplines, including the ten archers from the Isle of Man. Again our junior archers competed against the seniors, showing the level of their capabilities, but this time it was 18 yr old Charlotte George who shone. Charlotte had a high score of 544 to qualify in ninth place. She went on through to the ¼ finals where she unfortunately came up against Naomi Folkard one of the GB Olympic archers, and unfortunately lost on sets, although she did take one set from Folkard. Charlotte finished in 7th place finish over all. The honours on Sunday however have to go to senior lady compound shooter, Sarah Rigby. Yet again Sarah proved that she is a great competitor, especially under pressure. She qualified with a high score of 565 which seeded her 9th for the head to head competitions. Sarah then went from strength to strength, firstly putting out the reigning National Indoor Champion, then putting out the current World Outdoor Champion in the ¼ finals, and only losing out on the gold medal shootout by one set against professional archer Lucy Holderness. However in the medal match she then put in a magnificent performance against one of the Scottish Commonwealth Games archers to tie their match at 5 all and resulting in a one arrow shoot off. Sarah then secured her Bronze medal with a very confident shot into the ten ring on the target. She kept her nerve right to the end and proved that the high level competition she has experienced this year has really paid off. Back at home, members are reminded that this Saturday there will be a bag-pack at Shoprite Victoria Road, meet at 10 am. Also the round to be shot on Sunday at Onchan will be a Worcester with sighters at the usual times morning and afternoon.

October 24th 2010 Vegas

This week saw the archers take on the challenges of the Vegas round this round consists of twenty ends of three arrows shot at three targets and numbered arrows, number one arrow in numbered target one and so on which means if you score a ten with the wrong arrow in the wrong target you score zero so concentration levels have to be high. In the gents recurve Tony Hartley put in a storming first two ends and only dropped five points which gave him a lead that was good enough to top the podium while Splinters back Dave Berry had two misses this set the tempo for the day for Berry by finishing with eight misses to get the runners up spot, Colin Moore also had three misses and managed to keep his sights set high putting in a PB puts him on the bottom run of the podium with Michael Tancurin trying new equipment again putting in five misses forces his retirement. Gents compound saw Team Isle of Man CWG archery team coach Peter Mumford take to the targets after four weeks off and still carrying a virus picked up from the Delhi trip with screws backing of on his bow forces his retirement. Ladies Recurve saw Anne Rutland shoot just below her PB but puts in a season’s best with five misses. In the ladies compound division saw the George girls go head to head for the first time at an indoor round Aalin started well and held a fourteen point lead over her sister Kirsten by the halfway stage at the restart a slight lapse in concentration and missing her shooting detail had to record three misses, Aalin pushes her performance up but could not claw back the points lost with those misses and finishes three points behind her sister so first blood goes to Kirsten. Juniors Recurve discipline shot a Fita 18 this saw Chris Holmes top the table but the big surprise of the day was from Adam Wright who chased Holmes all the way and put a massive 300 points on his PB not bad as it’s only the second time he’s shot this round.

October 17th 2010 Worcester

This weeks Worcester round started well with the morning session getting of to a storming start with everyone on target to get PB’s at the halfway break the targets were set on scores were high only the be interrupted by the other group in the building setting the fire alarm off with a bouncy castle. This making a full evacuation of the building and full fire brigade attendance on word of the fire chief shooting could commence after 30 minutes in the cold crisp manx wind everyone’s muscles were cold. On starting shooting again archer could only get two more ends in before the alarm sounds again another set back where archers were in the cold again for another 30 minutes and on returning to complete their competition with the late finish and the unpredictable fire alarm the afternoon session had to be cancelled even with the inconvenience of the fire alarms there was only one PB coming from Kirsten George who has now changed from recurve to compound. Tony Hartley took advantage over Michael Tancurin, Dave Berry and Colin Moore and only one lady recurver getting a chance to shot Anne Rutland put in a creditable score even dropping 10 points at the restarts due to the fire alarms. Welcome back home to the CWG Team Isle of Man hope the jetlag and tummy bugs subside.
