This week shoot was a Fita 900 this round is shot over three different distances 60, 50 and 40 metres and 30 arrows at each distance. Changeable weather conditions with south westerly winds gusting and the sun trying to shine through the cloudy conditions, with all that to contend with two new club records were shot by Tony Hartley in the recurve discipline, Hartley still on a high from a trip to France and coming back engaged, and Adrian Bruce gets to grips with the new release to get the compound record. The second spot on the recurve podium went to a limping and pain hit Dave Berry persevering with a Knee problem and on the next step was Michael Tancurin, and the early retirement from Colin Moore with a neck injury rounded of the recurve. The compound podium was close between Adrian Bruce and Peter Mumford with only 3 points between them after the first distance in favour of Bruce,
Then Bruce puts another 6 point advantage after the second distance, Mumford pulls one point back but has to settle for the second step on the podium.

And news from across the wet stuff sees three club archers shooting at the fifth and last round of the Archery GB National Series down in Exmouth UK they are Sarah Rigby, Charlotte George and sister Aalin. This two day event consists of a Fita 70 qualifying round followed by the Head to Head round on the Saturday and a full Fita round on the Sunday. On Saturday’s Fita 70 Rigby put in a great performance just too narrowly miss out on the podium slot and finish in forth. The Isle of Man Archery Club would like to send their congratulations to Tony and Moira on their engagement.
Next weeks scheduled Stafford round has been postponed to organize an extra double Fita 70 to aid the commonwealth games contestants with extra practice with the games only five weeks away and as normal field setup is 9:30 with sighters at 10:25 for a 10:30 shoot and the afternoon sighters at 1:55 for a 2pm shoot.
The final round of the Archery GB National Series took place at Exmouth Archery Club this weekend, with a strong Manx team in attendance.
Day 1 consisted of a 70 metre qualifying round followed by the International format Head to Head eliminations.
Charlotte George, competing in the ladies recurve division qualified in a brilliant 9th place for the head to head matches, unfortunately losing her 1/16th match by the narrowest of margins.
The ladies compound division was heavily represented by the youngest of the George sisters, Kirsten, accompanied by Commonwealth Games Team members Aalin George and Sarah Rigby. Kirsten qualified in 22nd position with a score of 476, with Aalin coming in at 12th scoring 605, with Sarah Rigby setting a solid 633 to rank 6th.
Kirsten’s first ever head to head match was met with trepidation, and she bowed out of her 1/16th match – taking with her, valuable experience for the future. Aalin’s draw meant that she met her GBR Team Mate 15 year old Daisy Clarke in her 1/16th match going out narrowly to Daisy 2/4. Sarah’s story was very different however – powering her way past all comers coming through to the Bronze Medal match, resulting in a 4th place overall for Delhi bound Sarah.

Day 2 saw the island’s top lady archers in action once again, this time shooting the Ladies FITA round. A great start by all was met with some very difficult hurdles to overcome. Sudden heavy rain during the 60 metre distance caught many unawares but the girls coped well, by the halfway lunch break Sarah held steady on the leader board in second position. There was high drama during the 50 metre distance, commenced just as the rain eased off after lunch when Junior Archer Charlotte George suffered a major equipment failure. Using the full 15 minutes allowed under FITA rules to facilitate repairs, she managed to get going again and displayed great composure at such a tense time to continue shooting. She recovered well and posted a final score of 1185, her second consecutive Master Bowman score, three of which are required to gain this classification. Another classification score came this time from young Kirsten who finished her round with a very respectable score of 1193 which for her, is a Junior Master Bowman standard score, which subject to clarification is her third and will allow her to now claim this award.
Commonwealth Games team mates Aalin George & Sarah Rigby both had very successful afternoons, with Sarah ending the tournament with a superb 1353 (her second Grand Master Bowman score in as many weeks, 3 are required to gain this classification) with Aalin Just a few points behind with a new PB of 1333 yet another Master Bowman score from the 14 year old.
